4-H benefit auction — Friday, Sept. 7. Hurley Auctions, 2800 Buchanan Trail East in Greencastle, Pa. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the silent bidding begins at 4:30 p.m. The live auction starts at 6:30 p.m. Eighth annual event benefits Franklin County 4-H clubs. Pressure canner dial gauge testing — Thursday, Sept. 13, 1 to 4 p.m. Penn State Extension Office, 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. Free. No need to bring your entire canner, just the lid. Signup is not required. If you cannot attend, you may drop your canner lid off and pick it up later. For more information, call 717-263-9226.

Penn State Extension Franklin County centennial celebration — Thursday, Sept. 13, 6 to 8 p.m. Ag Heritage Center, 185 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. The public is invited to help celebrate 100 years of Penn State Extension service in Franklin County. ServSafe food-safety certification — Monday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ag Heritage Center, 185 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. The National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe course is conducted by Penn State Extension. Registrants must attend both sessions. After attending the class sessions and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75 percent or greater score, participants will receive a ServSafe certificate, which meets the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s requirement for food-safety certification. The course covers information related to preventing cross-contamination, safe handling of food, temperature control, cleaning and sanitization, proper storage and pest control. The fee is $185 and includes a book, study materials and the exam. To reach the Washington County Extension office, drive about seven miles south of Hagerstown from the Interstate 70 exit onto Sharpsburg Pike. The office is in the Washington County Agricultural Education Center complex. For more information about 4-H events, go to Extension.umd.edu.
