Former Mastercard Exec Becomes Zwipe’s Head of Certification

A new Zwipe executive could prove to be a powerful agent in the company’s efforts to promote its biometric card technology.

Pierre Girod, Zwipe’s new Head of Certification, comes to the company from an almost ten-year stint with Mastercard, having served in multiple roles with the latter including Head of Lab Accreditation, TQM (‘Terminal Quality Management’) and CQM (‘Card Quality Management’); and Software Advisor, TQM and CQM Maintenance Project.

In a statement announcing Girod’s appointment with Zwipe, the company asserted that he “will lead Zwipe’s certification efforts, serving as Zwipe’s primary liaison with the payment networks.” The company added that Girod “will also be responsible for other payment industry affiliated specification bodies such as EMVCo and the FIDO alliance.”

Zwipe further explained that together with its partners, it is “now entering into the phase where dual-interface biometric payment cards can be certified based on specifications defined by the leading payment networks,” pointing to the importance of Girod’s role; and the company noted that it plans to attain these certifications for its solutions “by mid-2019.”

It’s an ambitious plan, but Zwipe is already well on its way, having seen its technology used in high-profile Gemalto-led trials of biometric cards earlier this year, and having acquired an early distribution partner for its biometric payment card technology toward the end of summer.
